With the Hadza, you’ll sleep in your own tent with a comfy mattress. If you’d like, you’re also welcome to build and sleep in your own bushcraft shelter. You’ll share a twin room with another guest during the safari portion unless you select the single-room supplement.
Yes, we do cater for vegans. However, it’s essential to understand that the Hadza will continue hunting as part of their daily life which can be distressing to some guests. While we often share food with them, our accompanying chef prepares three delicious African meals a day over the fire. You’ll also join the Hadza on their hunts, and they may offer fresh meat from the day’s catch which we encourage guests to only eat at thier own discretion as we can not guarantee cooking standards.
In June, mosquito levels around the Hadza territory near Lake Eyasi are generally low. It’s the beginning of the dry season, so there’s less standing water for mosquitoes to breed in, which reduces bite risk and lowers the chance of malaria. However, as a precaution, antimalarials are recommended.
During the safari portion of your adventure, you will see massive elephant herds, often seen wandering among ancient baobab trees. You may also spot lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, wildebeest, ostriches, and baboons. Tarangire is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 500 bird species, including colourful lovebirds and massive kori bustards. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of elusive animals like cheetahs or caracals.
During your time with the Hadzabe, you’ll learn essential bushcraft and survival skills from friction fire-starting (bow and hand drill), building natural shelters, sourcing and purifying water in the wild, and mastering foraging, animal tracking and hunting techniques using handmade bows and arrows. You’ll also gain insight into tracking wildlife, identifying edible plants, and understanding the Hadza’s deep, instinctive connection to the land. knowledge that’s as ancient as it is practical.
During dry season, when we go, daytime temperatures stay comfortably warm, between 24–28°C (75–82°F), perfect for exploring without overheating.
Nights, especially around Lake Eyasi, can cool down quickly to 10–15°C (50–59°F), so you’ll definitely feel the difference once the sun drops. Humidity is low, and rain is very unlikely during this time.
Tip: Bring layers. Breathable clothing for the warm days, and something warmer. like a fleece or light jacket. for the evenings. It’s all about adapting as the temperature shifts.
The level of the excursion and pace of the trip depends on the activities you want to be involved in, plenty of the expedition will be slower around the camp. However at sunrise we will join the Hadza for a hunt which can be hard to keep up even for the fittest of us. we will also take a few hikes. To make the most of your trip. We feel the fitter you are, the better (as with life as a whole.). So, several months before you leave, we will send you a few exercises you might choose to do to strengthen your lower back and legs.
Your guide for this adventure will be Tom Williams, the founder of Desert Island Survival and the winner of the TV series Alone UK. Learn more about Tom here. He will be joined by 4 local guides who will help as interpreters, cooks and all round super heros.
