YouTube stars Kara and Nate – Behind the scenes on a Desert Island
Hi, This is Tom, I thought you might want to hear a little more about Kara and Nate’s Adventure from me!
Firstly, I have to share something that is almost nauseatingly true. These guys are genuinely just as lovely as they come across in their videos.
I found it incredible is their level of unwavering enthusiasm for life is just as you see! This is neither staged nor contrived. I could not quite believe it.
K&N are hands down humble, kind and excellent humans. Optimism, positivity & kindness are all excellent survival traits for a tribe member, so it was no surprise to us they did well on the island.

I feel like I am writing a school report now, but another important survival trait is perseverance and tenacity. Another area that impressed me was their genuine interest and desire to learn everything we could possibly teach them (particularly Nate and Dusty here). Whenever it was siesta or ‘throw a Frisbee’ time on the island, Nate would recommence braiding his fishing line. His work ethic really shone through. Few of our castaways possess the attention span to stick out learning most aspects of what we teach. A desire for instant gratification and a lack of patience is ever common these days.
We had a riot hanging out with them on the island. Some of the coolest aspects of their adventure could not be captured on film. My favourite was on the very first night, I encouraged everyone at 9 pm to take a swim in the inky black ocean before the moon had risen. Why? PHOSPHORESCENT PLANKTON. This bioluminescent wonder lights up the ocean a neon yellow-green and turns even the most reserved adult into a little kid. We spent a solid 30 minutes flailing our arms and squealing like schoolgirls at their favourite concert. It truly is a magical experience and one I NEVER get bored of.
Typically, after the training phase, we provide our castaways with a number of items to help for the final 3-day survival phase, after all, our trips are built for novices who have never done anything like this before.

Above is everything we offered K&N. From left to right are the bowls, cordage, tongs plus friction fire kit they made. Next is the satellite phone and medical kit in case of an emergency. Also, a hand knife, machete, basic fishing kit, tarp, and sleeping sheet; then toiletries including toothbrush, sunscreen, bug repellant, toilet roll, and WATER. They refused everything in the picture to the right of the machete!
- No tarpaulin in case of rain, IT RAINED.
- No sheet for sleeping – SO MANY CRABS
- No ration of flour for ash cakes on the fire – THEY GOT HUNGRY
- No toilet roll…
- No ration of water – It only rained after a few days!
We would typically never let our castaways undertake the final 3 days without the water rations, but in this case did.
What did you think? Would you ever do this? Let us know below!
