While a luxury resort or golf weekend might be appealing in the short term, we believe they are disconnected from the purpose of rewarding high achievers or the need to bring together remote teams. Sure, fine dining and spa days are pleasant, but what will you come away with? A slap on the back, and then back to it? We are of the belief that generic team-building workshops like trust falls just don’t cut it.  When your team is achieving targets that are truly exceptional, their reward for doing so should match that. Let us take you somewhere completely different. And leave you there. At Desert Island Survival, we don’t just offer wilderness adventures—we deliver experiences that promote growth and inspire, as well as driving real results for your organisation. Our survival expeditions are designed to push the boundaries of traditional incentive and team-building programs (cue rolling of eyes and general muttering), taking your teams out of their comfort zones, developing critical leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills in an environment that challenges and inspires. This is a once in a lifetime adventure. This is also an opportunity to improve your team’s cohesion and synergy. The two are not mutually exclusive. Discover what makes these wild places so rare and why now is the time to experience them before they are gone. Quick Answer: True wilderness is disappearing fast. Some of our islands in Panama and the Philippines are already being sold, or developed. Each expedition now feels more precious because we know it will not last. The wild is shrinking, but for now it is still out there, if you go soon enough. Tom was at the guesthouse, getting ready to welcome the next tribe for the Maldives expedition. The instructors were checking hammocks and gear, the safety briefing notes were on the table, and the guests were landing that afternoon. Then his phone rang. It was about the island in the Philippines, one we have used for years. A place where hundreds of castaways have slept under palm leaves, learned to fish by hand, and remembered what they are capable of. The owner had started the process of selling it. Just a few months earlier, we had received the same call about our Panama island. These things take time, the sale, the permits, the building, but it always marks the beginning of the end. Once the process starts, the countdown begins. Realistically, we will be able to use those islands for another year or two. After that, we will either have to find new ones or close those chapters completely. When Tom stepped outside, sat down on the low wall by the guesthouse, and sent a voice note to Layla. “I got the call,” he said. “It’s the Philippines this time. ” He sat for a moment to take it... --- Quick Answer: Survival instructors are trained to stay calm when conditions turn unpredictable. At Desert Island Survival, they combine bushcraft expertise with emotional intelligence, teaching guests not just how to survive but how to think clearly under pressure. True excellence comes from awareness, humility, and constant learning. The tropical rain came without warning. A dark wall of water swept across the beach, soaking gear and extinguishing fires in seconds. The group looked to the instructor. He smiled, adjusted his hood, and started gathering palm fronds. The storm was not a problem. It was part of the lesson. That quiet authority, the ability to stay calm when nature reminds you who is in charge, defines every Desert Island Survival instructor. The Philippines, with its remote island terrain, humidity, and intense tropical conditions, is the perfect classroom for testing composure and leadership under pressure—when the environment itself demands focus and adaptability. In this article, we explore how our instructors prepare for the unpredictable, what mindset separates survival from panic, and how lessons learned in the wild apply to life far beyond the shoreline. A Strange Job with Serious Responsibility Being a Desert Island Survival instructor is a unique job that demands a rare blend of skill, awareness, and empathy. You need to know how to rub sticks together, identify which plants can help you, and still look composed while opening a coconut with a machete. But the role is far more than that. You are an ambassador for surviving in the natural... --- Quick Answer: Real survival expeditions involve risk, and that is exactly what makes them different, powerful, and so fulfilling. At Desert Island Survival, every challenge is designed to test you safely. From hydration systems to satellite protocols and instructor drills, invisible safety layers protect every castaway while keeping the adventure authentic. Adventure without risk is not adventure. It is entertainment. It is easy. Scroll through social media and you will see plenty of expeditions that look wild but are carefully staged—clean tents, polished gear, and perfectly timed sunsets. But, real wilderness does not follow a script. Weather changes. Tools fail. Fatigue sets in. And that is when genuine adventure begins. At Desert Island Survival, we believe risk is not something to remove but something to master. It is the ingredient that transforms a trip from leisure and pretty photos into growth. That only works when risk is managed through discipline, systems, and experience. In this article, we explain what managed risk really means, how we keep expeditions safe without making them feel sanitized, and why embracing the unpredictable leads to the most meaningful adventure of your life. Why Real Adventure Needs Real Risk Genuine exploration cannot exist without the possibility of things going wrong. The goal is not danger for its own sake but consequence. When outcomes matter, focus sharpens, teamwork strengthens, and transformation happens. That is what separates a holiday from a genuine expedition. If everything is predictable, nothing changes you. Do as you have always done, and you... --- When most people think of Panama, they imagine a tropical escape. Palm-fringed beaches, cocktails at sunset, maybe a bit of snorkeling. Beautiful, yes. But our Panama Survival Adventure isn’t just a holiday. It’s something much more powerful: a reset. A reset of your nervous system. A reset of your relationship with challenge. A reset of what really matters. This isn’t about poolside relaxation. It’s about stripping away the noise of modern life, learning primal survival skills, and reconnecting with the wilderness; all while being guided by world-class instructors and supported by invisible safety. Why a Survival Adventure? Our founder, Tom, knows first-hand the impact of true wilderness immersion. After spending 35 days alone in the wild, he came back sharper, calmer, and more aligned in both mind and body. In his words, “it’s not about hardship for the sake of hardship; it’s about realignment with the life our bodies and minds evolved for. ” For 99. 99% of human history we were hunter-gatherers. Living simply. Moving with the sun. Eating whole foods. Sleeping deeply. Sharing tribe life and bonding over fires. When you’re marooned on a desert island in Panama for eight days, you experience that realignment. And it changes you. The Learn → Survive → Celebrate Journey Every Panama survival trip follows our proven process: 1. Learn – The first days are about training. You’ll learn core survival skills: fire-starting, fishing, shelter building, navigation. These are taught by world-class instructors who balance authority with encouragement. 2. Survive – The... --- When a flip-flop strap snapped on the beach I was bushwalking in the Kalahari Desert on our Okavango expedition last month when the strap on my flip-flop tore clean through. Huge acacia thorns lay everywhere, the sand was scorching, and there was no chance of picking up a new pair for hundreds of miles. Frustration came first. Then the instinct to just go barefoot. But, I realised those same thorns could be my saviour. I cut one about 5 cm long, threaded it back through the thong, and spread it across the bottom of the sole. Five minutes later, I was walking again. Quite stylish, but (more importantly) functional. Enough to get me to camp where I could reinforce it further with wire. In fact, that little repair lasted the rest of the week. More importantly, it highlighted something fundamental: problems are always there to be solved. There’s always a solution and it’s only your knowledge and ingenuity that hold us back from finding it. That’s the essence of bushcraft. Not nostalgia. Not fantasy survival shows. It’s practical competence that transforms both how you travel and how your lense is shifted to fix small problems and also see the bushcraft all around us, from the rattan chair I am on, to the bamboo service holder in the middle of the table. Here are seven bushcraft skills that shift you from consumer of solutions, to creator of them. 1. Cordage Making: When Everything Becomes Rope The Technique: Strip fibrous bark from... --- The Thing About Island Time I was sitting at home having lunch with my family in Lisbon, six months after returning from our Philippines expedition, when my phone buzzed with another "urgent" email. My finger hovered over the notification, but something had changed. For the first time in my professional life, I asked myself: Is this actually urgent, or have I just forgotten what urgency feels like? On the island, urgent meant the fire was dying in a rainstorm. Or fresh water was running low. Or someone needed immediate help with a shelter that was about to collapse. Problems with real consequences that required immediate action. This email was about a client wanting to move a call by thirty minutes. I turned the phone face down and finished my lunch. Slowly. Like I'd learned to eat when every calorie required effort to obtain and fire to cook. That moment — choosing presence over reactivity in a glass tower surrounded by artificial urgency — was when I realized the island hadn't just taught me survival skills. It had rewired my nervous system's relationship with what actually matters. A week in the wild becomes years of seeing through the manufactured emergencies that keep most people in a constant state of low-grade panic. The Gifts That Keep Giving The transformation doesn't announce itself with fanfare. It sneaks up in ordinary moments, like discovering you've developed a completely different relationship with your own mind. When Less Becomes More Sarah, a marketing executive from London,... --- A Guide to Conversations Your Nervous System Misses I was fiddling with the thermostat for the third time in an hour — 22°C felt too cold, 23°C too warm — when it properly hit me: I'd become a bloody goldfish in a climate-controlled bowl. Here I was, someone who'd walked to the North Pole, having an existential crisis over a single degree. On that Arctic expedition, I'd slept in temperatures that would have killed Victorian explorers. My body had adapted, thrived even. But back in civilisation, I was panicking about minor temperature fluctuations. We've outsourced our basic biological functions to technology. Our nervous systems, fine-tuned over millions of years to handle proper challenges, now treat a dead phone battery like a sabre-toothed tiger threat. But here's what the cold adaptation researchers have found: your body remembers far more than your mind thinks. Those neural pathways for resilience don't just vanish — they go dormant, waiting for the right nudge to wake up. This isn't about becoming some hardcore survivalist. It's about having a conversation with systems that modern comfort has put to sleep. The Cold Water Chat What you'll do: End your shower with thirty seconds of cold water. Work up to two minutes over a few weeks. What's actually happening: You're reminding your nervous system it knows how to handle manageable stress. Cold water triggers norepinephrine release — the same chemical that sharpens focus and steadies emotions. In the Canadian wilderness for "Alone," I learned that cold isn't the... --- I was watching Tom coax flames from damp tinder in Panama rain when something shifted in how I understood what these expeditions actually do. He wasn't teaching fire-making technique — not really. He was holding space for someone's relationship with failure to transform. Sarah had been trying for three hours. Her hands were blistered. Her technique was perfect. But every time an ember formed, she'd get excited, blow too hard, and watch it die. Tom could have taken over. Could have demonstrated the "right" way again. Instead, he sat quietly, occasionally adding a piece of bark or adjusting her hand position by millimeters. "The fire will teach you," he said simply. "I'm just here to make sure you don't give up before it does. " On attempt seventeen, Sarah's ember caught. Not because Tom had taught her something new, but because she'd finally learned to trust the process more than her anxiety about the outcome. That's when I understood: our instructors aren't just survival skills teachers. They're translators between your current self and the capabilities you don't know you possess. They speak the ancient language of human competence that modern life has trained out of most of us. The Humans Behind the Magic Tom Williams – The Unlikely Adventurer Leading November Maldives 2025 Tom Williams failed academically in school. Bottom of his year. Dyslexic. One teacher told him "the only way Tom Williams would ever get to university is if he climbed through the bathroom window. " That teacher was... --- You've been hovering over the booking page for three weeks now. Maybe longer. The cursor hovers over "Reserve Your Spot" while your brain runs through every possible scenario where you fail spectacularly. What if I can't start a fire? What if I'm the weakest person in the group? What if I cant hack it and want to leave the island.   I know because I get this email every month or so. "This sounds amazing, but I don't think I'm ready. Maybe next year when I'm in better shape / have more experience / feel more confident / have more time have more money" Last month, I got this message from Sarah, a 34-year-old gym owner from Manchester: "I've never even been camping properly. The closest I've come to survival skills is using the emergency flashlight on my phone. Am I crazy for even considering this? " --- Survival doesn’t leave a lasting mark on the island, but it can leave a mark on you. We believe in the power of nature to change lives. But we also know nature doesn’t exist for our benefit alone,it’s something we must protect, preserve, and tread through gently. That’s why we’ve built every adventure on one guiding principle: you can go deep into the wild without leaving a trace. Yes, some of our journeys involve long-haul flights. That’s a reality we don’t shy away from. But what happens after you land, that’s where the difference is made. Acknowledging the Paradox: The Long-Haul Dilemma We get it. Flying to a remote island feels at odds with living sustainably. It’s a conversation we’ve had many times, and one we welcome.   So here it is: our trips do have a carbon footprint. And we’re not pretending otherwise. But what happens after that flight, the way you live, learn, and move on the island, has the power to shift everything.   Your perspective. Your consumption habits. Your relationship with nature and community. When you carry your water, build your own shelter, live without electricity or plastic, and sleep under the stars, you don’t just experience nature. You understand the importance of it. And often, that one week away from convenience and comfort plants the seed for a lifetime of more conscious choices. People return from the wild with less need for stuff, more reverence for resources, and a fierce commitment to tread lighter going forward. In that way,... --- You’re comfortable. But something’s off. You’re not alone. You’ve got a routine. A warm bed. A stocked fridge. Maybe even a good job and a well oiled social life. But under all that comfort, there’s a quiet restlessness. A hum in your bones that says: There’s more. What if that unease isn’t something to fix, but something to follow? At Desert Island Survival, we meet people every week who say the same thing: “I don’t know why I signed up for this. I just felt like I needed an adventure. ”  The Trap of Routine: When Comfort Becomes a Cage Routines are meant to keep us safe, but over time, they can also shrink us. You wake up, check your phone, drink the same coffee, commute the same route, scroll the same feedsThe days blend. You’re not living your just filling time. You feel flat, even in moments that should bring joy. You feel tired, even though you haven’t done anything hard. This is the paradox of modern life: everything is comfortable, yet something feels off. We weren’t built for constant ease. Human beings evolved to adapt, to move, to engage with our environment. But when life becomes too predictable, too padded, too processed, we lose that edge. We stop feeling the contrast that gives meaning to rest, to achievement, to aliveness. As one past participant put it:“I didn’t realise how numb I’d become until I was cold, wet, and laughing beside a fire I helped build. ” It’s not... --- I once watched a corporate lawyer cry into his hands beside a barely-there campfire on a cold Welsh coastline. Not from pain, not from fear — but from silence. For the first time in years, his mind had gone quiet. Three days earlier, this man had been managing million-dollar deals, his phone buzzing with the urgent demands of modern life. Now, crouched in the dirt, trying to coax flames from damp kindling, he’d stumbled into something our species has known for millennia: the wild doesn’t care about your title, your achievements, or who you think you are. The Sensory Archaeology of Being Human We’ve buried ourselves under layers of stimulation that would have driven our ancestors mad. The average person checks their phone 96 times a day. We’ve created a world where quiet feels foreign, where boredom triggers panic, where the sound of our own breathing has become uncomfortable. Your nervous system wasn’t designed for this. It evolved in environments like Pembrokeshire where the most urgent sound was wind through leaves, where the brightest light was fire, where the most complex decision was which direction to walk. Step into the wild, and something ancient awakens. Your cortisol levels drop within minutes. Your heart rate variability improves. Your prefrontal cortex, that overtaxed CEO of your brain, finally gets a break. This isn’t hippie mysticism — it’s measurable biology. Forced Presence There’s a moment — usually by day two or three on our UK Weekend Adventure — when you can see it... --- Who Are the Hadza? If you want to understand the roots of humanity and real bushcraft, you’ve got to start with the Hadza. The Hazda—living near Lake Eyasi in northern Tanzania—are one of the last true hunter-gatherer societies left on Earth. No livestock. No fields. No phones. Just bows, arrows, deep-rooted instinct, and the kind of environmental awareness most of us have long forgotten. There are around 1,300 Hadzabe left, and they live without permanent homes. Everything they need, they find—or make—with their hands. They track animals across dry, cracked soil. They forage tubers, honey, foots and berries. They drink water pulled from the land and containers made from clay.   Tthen there’s the Greater Honeyguide bird—an wild bird that leads them to hidden beehives in exchange for scraps of wax. If that doesn’t make your jaw drop, I don’t know what will. To spend time with the Hadza is to encounter a living echo of how all humans once lived—close to the land, bound by community, and free from modern infrastructure. Tanzania: Land of Origins and Untamed Beauty Tanzania is more than just where the Hadza live. It’s a place where prehistory and modernity meet—where ancient cultures still shape daily life and vast wild spaces remain untouched. Nestled in the Great Rift Valley, the Lake Eyasi basin is the Hadza’s ancestral homeland. Here, amidst baobab trees and thorny brushland, they connect with the land, follow the dry-season paths of antelope, track the scent of tubers through dusty soil, and... --- Why Safety Is the Heart of Every Adventure We Run Surviving on a desert island sounds extreme, and in certain ways it is, is there risk? Absolutely, one can not eliminate risk and nor would we want to sanitise our adventures to feel like some generic pack them in an adventure company. What we can do is mitigate risk and prepare for those worst case scenarios. We have worked with some of the best expedition risk assessment consultants in the world who assist TV productions such as the BBC to ensure we approach risk in the most responsible way we can. Because safety is what lets people let go. When you’re not worried about the basics—getting lost, injured, or overwhelmed—you open up. You connect more deeply with nature, with your team, with yourself. That’s the paradox: the more invisible our safety systems are, the more transformative your experience becomes. That’s why every decision we make—every instructor we hire, every location we scout, every route we plan—runs through a safety lens first. Heres how we do it.   What “Safety First” Means to Desert Island Survival To many, “safety” sounds like rules and red tape. But to us, it’s what unlocks the magic. Think of it like rigging in a stunt scene: invisible, but absolutely critical. It all starts with location scouting. We're not just taking you to any old desert island. First we need to understand the risks. From vipers to pirates, brazilian wandering spiders to coastal currents it all... --- Most of Us Aren’t Lost—We’re Just Unwilded We chase self-improvement with the same urgency we check our phones: relentlessly, and often pointlessly. We binge podcasts, subscribe to newsletters, dabble in cold showers or breathwork apps—but still, something’s missing. Here’s the hard truth: you don’t need another guru or ground-set. You need nature. The premise is simple: our bodies and minds evolved to be hunter gatherers and have not had an evolutionary second way to adapt to the modern world we now exist in. Maybe you can feel this in the tightness of your chest and shoulders as you read. Out in the wild, there’s no algorithm to cater to your comfort. You eat if you catch something. You stay warm if you build it. And when all the distractions vanish, what’s left is you—your raw self, stripped of filters and fine print. At Desert Island Survival, we’ve watched hundreds of people hit their limit—and then blow past it. The wild does that. It strips you down, shakes you up, and shows you what you’re made of. Why Nature Is the Toughest and Truest Mentor Nature doesn’t give out participation trophies. It gives you reality—cold, wet, and occasionally beautiful beyond words. But that’s where growth happens. Problem-solving? Try keeping a fire lit in sideways rain. Humility? Wait until a simple crab outsmarts you for dinner. Presence? Nothing brings you into the now slowing down in the wild without distraction Nature doesn’t care about your job title, your bank balance, or how... --- Introduction: The First Shower After the Wild There’s something borderline religious about the first hot shower after a week of living like a prehistoric castaway. You step in, and the water hits you—not just physically, but emotionally. It washes off salt, sand, fish guts, smoke, effort. And something more. Ego, maybe. Noise. Distraction. I remember walking into a basic hotel room after 35 days alone in the Canadian wilderness. It had a bed, a kettle, and a shower. That’s it. No marble floors. No room service. But it felt like the Four Seasons had opened its gates just for me. I ran the hot water, stripped off what felt like a second skin, and stood there for twenty minutes just being. No need to rush. No need to think. I was home, and it had running water. That’s the thing about survival—it reprograms your reward system. It strips life down to the studs. And when you rebuild, every beam feels golden. You don’t just enjoy luxury—you worship it. Contrast Breeds Appreciation We live in a world where luxury is on tap. You can get Thai food delivered at midnight, queue up five-star spa days on your phone, and sip cocktails with dry ice before noon if you fancy. But here’s the kicker: when comfort is constant, it becomes invisible. It stops feeling like a gift and starts feeling like a given. Then you go on a Desert Island Survival trip—maybe in the Philippines, or Tonga, or Botswana—and you sleep on... --- When I lived alone in the Canadian wild, I had ten items. TEN. Not once did I miss a fifth T-shirt or an inflatable neck pillow. Turns out, survival doesn’t care how trendy your gear is. It cares if you’ve got grit, smarts, and a damn good knife. Whether you’re cast away on a tropical island, hacking through dense forest, or just trying to unplug for a weekend, overpacking isn’t just a rookie mistake—it’s a liability. It’ll slow you down, burn you out, and break your spirit faster than hunger ever could. So let’s break it down—how to pack light and stay dangerous, without sacrificing safety, sanity, or that sweet, sweet sense of self-reliance. The Must-Haves (And Why We Keep It Simple) On our expeditions, we provide the big, heavy stuff—hammocks, machetes, group essentials. You? Your job’s simple: bring what keeps you healthy, functional, and sharp. Nothing more. This is your streamlined survival loadout. Every item has earned its place. Bushcraft Knife (Not a rambo hunting knife)Your best friend. Cuts, crafts, cleans. If you forget everything else, don’t forget this. Head Torch ( with red setting) Your lifeline after dark. Keep your hands free and your fears in check. Sun Protection Because sunburn turns you from survivor to liability. 40L Dry Bag or Rucksack Big enough for essentials, small enough to keep you honest. Sleeping Bag Liner or Lightweight Bag Adds warmth, blocks bugs, and keeps your sleeping setup clean. Quick-Drying Clothes Cotton is dead weight. Go synthetic. Wet clothes... --- Introduction: The Tech-Free Wake-Up Call Imagine this: you wake up to the hum of cicadas, not a smartphone alarm. You stretch in your hammock. There’s no buzz, no ping, no push notification vying for your attention. Just you, the breeze, and the rustle of nature waking up with you. This isn’t a hypothetical. This is a real day on one of our Desert Island Survival adventures—where the Wi-Fi bars vanish and something far more powerful takes its place: presence. It’s not about escaping modern life forever. It’s about pausing the noise long enough to hear what’s been drowned out. Your instincts. Your breath. Your thoughts. But here’s the question: What really happens when we step away from our screens—completely? No scrolling. No swiping. Just the raw, wild now.   A Day in the Life – From Dawn to Dusk Off-Grid It starts with the sunrise. Not just seeing it—feeling it. The warmth touches your skin before your eyes have even fully opened. There's no snooze button. No screen glow. Just the rhythm of light nudging you awake. On a typical day with us—whether you’re castaway in the Philippines, kayaking the Botswana Delta, or hiking in the Swedish forest—it’s nature that sets the pace. You crawl out from your hammock, stretch, maybe yawn like an animal because that’s exactly what you are out here—an animal, stripped of modern habits and reacquainting yourself with your natural state. During the survival phase of our survival adventure, breakfast isn’t from a packet. It’s what... --- When you think of the Maldives, you probably picture white-sand beaches, luxury resorts, and turquoise waters lapping gently beneath overwater villas. It’s a honeymooner’s paradise. A place to unwind, sip cocktails, and do absolutely nothing. A place where the coral reefs are still thriving, the marine life is incredible, and survival isn't just a story—it's the real deal. But that’s not the Maldives we found. In January, I left Europe to go island scouting. The goal? Find the perfect desert island for our next survival adventure. I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting much from the Maldives. Too polished, too crowded, too... brochure-ready. How wrong I was. We’ve run survival expeditions around the world, but our new adventure in the Maldivian archipelago? It's next level. Here's what makes this the ultimate trip for adventurers craving more than luxury. 1. The Side of the Maldives You’ve Never Seen Within hours of arriving, we were told we were the first tourists to stay on our base island in eight months. This wasn’t mass tourism. This was untouched wilderness, welcoming locals, and an archipelago hiding more secrets than I ever imagined. Of the 250 islands that make up this ancient volcanic atoll—only 20 are inhabited. That leaves hundreds of uninhabited islands to explore. And that’s exactly what we did. Over the course of a week, we visited nine islands. Some were wild, resource-rich, and full of promise. Others were too inaccessible or not quite right. But two of them stood out—and they’re now part of... --- Stranded. Alone. No backup plan. No warm hotel at the end of the day. For centuries, survival stories have fascinated us—real accounts of famous castaways left to battle nature, isolation, and their own limits. Some were left to survive on a desert island, others adrift with no idea if they’d ever be finally rescued. These were no scripted adventure films. These were real people, marooned on uninhabited islands, jungles or on a remote island, or lost at sea. They didn’t have pre-packed meals or comfortable shelter. They had to gather resources, build shelter, make fire, and find ways to survive. Some made it. Others didn’t. These are their incredible stories. 1. Alexander Selkirk – The Real Robinson Crusoe The British ship was falling apart. The food was running out. And Alexander Selkirk saw disaster coming. In 1704, during a voyage through the South Pacific, he made a choice—stay on a doomed ship bound for wreckage or be left on an uninhabited island. He chose the island. His fellow crew members left him behind, believing he’d never last. But Selkirk survived. How He Survived on a Remote Island Fire – He used feral goats for fat to keep his flames going. Shelter – No hotel, just a hut made from tree branches. Finding food – Goats, shellfish, wild turnips, and whatever else he could hunt. Companions – No fellow castaways, but he tamed two cats to keep the rats away. After four years, British sailors discovered him, and a passing ship... --- The bow and drill method is one of the most ancient fire-starting techniques. It's all about using a bow to spin a drill against a piece of wood to create enough friction to create heat to create an ember that ignites a tinder bundle. It's not only an essential survival skill but an art that is immensely satisfying when achieved and connects you to your primal self. What wood is best for bow drill? Choosing the right wood for a bow drill kit is essential. The drill and hearthboard need to be soft wood and the handhold a harder wood ( or even bone or stone or shell). For the fire making parts you are looking for soft wood, as softer wood have a lower combustion temperature. A great test for the softness of a wood is whether you can dent it with your fingernail. Our favourite woods on desert islands and Hibiscus and gumbo Limbo. In Europe, willow, poplar, lime, larch, and aspen are all good choices. In north America you can add Cotton wood, Mullein and cedar to that list. Once you have identified the right wood, you need to find some that is dead yet not rotten. There are two ways to achieve this, often you can find standing dead wood, still attached to the tree but dead that you can snap off. Or you can cut down the right sections whilst it is green and dry it in the sun, this normally only takes 24 hours... --- The idea of escaping to a desert island often conjures up images of luxury resorts, cocktails on the beach, and infinity pools overlooking the ocean. But what if the real magic and fun of an island adventure lay in something entirely different? Imagine stepping off a speedboat, setting foot on an uninhabited island and instead of buildings seeing untouched wilderness. Jungles right to the beach and nature still living in harmony. How the islands used to be. Then imagine learning the skills to survive off the land with little more than a handfull of survival items with a trivbel of fellow curious castaways. This isn’t just another vacation—it’s a unique island survival experience that will transform the way you see yourself and the world. Would you do it? Adventure Begins Where Comfort Ends Luxury travel is predictable—plush hotels, planned itineraries, and five-course meals at sunset. The only personal growth you willacheive here is around your waistline. But real adventure? That’s something different entirely. On an island survival expedition, every day presents new challenges. There’s no chef preparing your dinner (well, in the Philippines there is for the training phase), no air-conditioned suite waiting at the end of the day—just you, the island, the environment and the skills you must develop to survive. Here’s the reality: You arrive—the island is breathtaking, but there’s no hotel. No restaurant. Just the lapping waves, the jungle behind you, and the challenge ahead. You make fire—because without it, there’s no warmth, no dinner, no survival.... --- The name Robinson Crusoe brings to mind the ultimate tale of adventure, survival, and self-reliance. This English novel, written by Daniel Defoe in 1719, follows the surprising adventures of a man stranded on a deserted island. But few people know that Defoe wrote the book based on the real-life survival story of a Scottish castaway, Alexander Selkirk. Selkirk’s voyage led him to an uninhabited island, where he became the only survivor after he was marooned for four years. His experience on a Pacific island off the coast of Chile called Más a Tierra laid the foundation for one of the most famous characters in English literature—the work's protagonist, Robinson Crusoe. Life on an Uninhabited Island Unlike Crusoe, Selkirk’s island was not in the Caribbean but in the Pacific Ocean. It was wild, untamed, and empty, with no civilization or even coconuts in sight. Unlike Crusoe discovering a human footprint, Selkirk never encountered savages, pirates, or more cannibals—his greatest enemy was isolation. To survive, he had to adapt quickly. The island had goats, which Selkirk learned to hunt for food. He used their skins to make clothing and relied on local plants and fish to stay alive. He built shelters from tree branches and crafted tools from materials he found on the shore. Selkirk also faced the mental challenge of being completely alone. To keep his mind sharp, he read from his Bible, sang to himself, and set daily routines. Unlike Crusoe, who had Friday as a companion, Selkirk had no... --- We have a longing for wilderness. Those parts of our planet where humans have little impact. Remote places let you escape everyday life and experience nature at its purest. Whether you dream of snow-capped mountains, thick rain forests, or sandy islands lined with palm trees, these destinations offer breathtaking views and true adventure. From the icy landscapes of Greenland and the Arctic Ocean to the tropical beauty of Tonga, Anambas, and the Maldives, this guide will take you to some of the best remote holiday destinations in the world. 1. Patagonia: Wilderness at the End of the World Patagonia lies at the bottom of South America, spanning Argentina and Chile—one of the most remote and wild places on land. This vast region is home to mountain ranges, massive glaciers, and endless wilderness. Adventurers come here to explore the famous Torres del Paine National Park, climb icy peaks, and trek through untouched valleys. The cold lakes sparkle under the sun, while guanacos, condors, and pumas roam freely. Small towns like El Chaltén and Puerto Natales offer a place to rest after long hikes. Now you wont feel alone at any of these locations but large swaves of Patagonia are completely empty and if you develope the skills to be self reliance so you can unlock access to utter wilderness and head off into the complete wild with a few mates. Our founder Tom lived in Chile for 9 years and undertook numerous wilderness expeditions to these remote parts. Why Visit? See... --- Imagine waking up to the sound of lapping waves, a gentle ocean breeze, and peering out of your hammock to be greeted by the golden glow of the sunrise over an expansive beach. There are no alarms, no city noise—just you, nature, and a small group of fellow castaways on a desert island survival adventure. For some, this expedition might sound like a dream. For others, a real challenge. But for those who take on this extraordinary survival adventure, it’s an experience with the power to transform the way they see themselves, the world, and the limits of their own strength. Let’s walk through a typical day in your island survival experience, from sunrise to sunset, as you learn newfound skills to survive, adapt, and thrive. Morning: Waking Up on a desert island Your eyes open slowly, adjusting to the first light filtering through the palm trees. You stretch inside your expedition hammock, swaying gently between two sturdy branches. You’ve never woken up like this before—no soft bed, no buzzing phone, just the quiet hum of rustling palms and the rhythmic crash of waves against the shore. Today is day 3, a day of survival skills training. You take a deep breath. Desert island life feels raw and real yet comforting at the same time. You’re entirely off-grid, living on a secluded tropical island with few modern comforts, just the knowledge that in a few days time you have to rely on your new skills and your new tribe to... --- Why a Desert Island Survival Experience Boosts Team Performance It's natural that corporate retreats should evolve. Every other aspect of business is changing so fast, why shouldn't the way that we reward the teams that are making things happen? What people need in this environment changes too. A corporate retreat that provides participants with some form of disconnect, and still provides skills that will be used in perpetuity is a tough one to find. These twin priorities can be strange bedfellows, and striking a balance between them isn't the easiest thing to do. Of course, you want your team to view their time away as beneficial to them, both in regard to what they will actually be doing and how that will positively affect their goals; individually, and as a team. With that in mind, how about stranding them on a desert island? At Desert Island Survival we do things a little differently from any other corporate retreat. Our vision for what a retreat should be runs deep through how we create our experiences. The best sort of learning happens in an environment where you don't even realise it's happening. Your team will come away with a life experience that will bond them forever, be talked about endlessly, and motivate forward movement. There's nothing like it. Ditch the soulless norm. Embrace the extraordinary. In today’s fast-paced business world, corporate retreats and company retreats have become powerful ways for companies to enhance team performance, improve company culture, and motivate employees. A... --- If you are reading this then it's highly likely that standard corporate team building activities aren't your thing. The standard ideas may have done a job in the past, but times have changed. This has seen an attitude shift when it comes to bringing a team together, and so it should. With the business landscape changing so rapidly, your team building landscape should too. In fact, it's high time for that landscape to include some palm trees, bushcraft skills, and an island surrounded by azure-blue waters. That's where Desert Island Survival comes in. With our experience and your company, we can create something that will start on an island and spread across the entire culture of your business. Sounds like we're thinking big here? We hope so. Our company is succeeding because of people like you. The boxes in front of you contain some branded socks and a stress-ball". Sorry, that just won't cut the mustard. In today’s business landscape, employee incentive plans and programs have evolved significantly, moving beyond standard monetary rewards and financial incentives to focus on experiences that engage, inspire, and connect teams. As companies compete to attract and retain top talent, the need to offer effective employee incentive programs has become essential to cultivating a motivated and loyal workforce. Organisations now recognize that traditional monetary rewards, or cash incentives alone, don’t have the same lasting impact on employee morale and job satisfaction as immersive, meaningful experiences do. This shift is where survival adventures truly shine. These unique corporate reward experiences not only boost employee morale and engagement but also enhance personal growth, professional development, and a renewed sense of purpose among team-members. In these adventures, participants face real challenges that foster resilience, teamwork, and self-reliance, redefining what a truly effective employee incentive can offer. However, for most it will be the brain telling you that 'enough is enough! '. But why is this happening? Even if you are in control of other factors in a less-than-hospitable environment? Let's have a look. Surviving in the wilderness is a profound test of human endurance and adaptability. While physical skills such as building shelters, finding food, and navigating the terrain are crucial, the psychological aspects of survival are equally significant. Sure, you can pick up some idea of bushcraft know-how, but the real winner here was entertainment. Without Survivor we may not have had Alone, and a host of other 'how long can you do this for in a difficult environment' type shows to keep us glued to the friendly box in the living room (when survivor first aired this was very much how we consumed our moving pictures, streams were for that vital Survivor water top-up). Thanks are owed to Survivor for introducing millions of people to bushcraft skills, and the occasional outdoors miss-step. What did the series do right in the realm of adventure? Read on, reader, while we weigh up what's what. The Beginning When Survivor first aired in 2000 it was an instant ratings success, captivating audiences with its groundbreaking reality show format. Based on a Swedish television series created years earlier, the show became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring numerous adaptations in other countries, including the wildly popular American version. The first eleven seasons were among the top ten most-watched television shows annually in the United States, highlighting the show's pioneering role in promoting the format. The premise was simple: contestants were dropped in a remote location, divided into two tribes or sometimes more, and left to survive with minimal supplies. Each week, contestants would vote off a member at tribal council, leading up to the moment when one... --- In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, finding moments of calm and connection can be challenging. Shinrin-yoku, which literally means “forest bath,” was developed in Japan during the 1980s as a response to growing concerns about the negative impacts of urbanization on health. Unlike a physical bath, Shinrin-yoku is more about the metaphorical immersion in the natural environment. It’s the practice of slowing down and allowing oneself to be fully present in the forest, engaging all five senses to experience the forest atmosphere and energy. Where was Mr Beast’s Island? The beautiful island where Mr Beast pursued his adventure was ‘Isle a Quatre’, part of a group of islands called Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, South of the Caribbean. As you can see in his clip, it is a true island paradise; blue seas, beautiful beaches, and incredible views from the peaks of the numerous hills that roll across the land. Can’t take a trip to the International Space Station? In this case, the allure of remote islands hold a special fascination. Among these secluded retreats, one island stands out as the epitome of isolation: Tristan da Cunha. The Spectrum of Isolation: Inhabited and Uninhabited Islands Remote islands can be either inhabited or uninhabited, each presenting its own set of conditions and, like here at Desert Island Survival, potential for adventure. When we left our home continent of Africa 60,000-90,000 years ago something interesting happened, something dramatic. Our pigmentation altered, and we started to develop fairer skin. Our high melanin black skin which had provided us such fantastic sun protection at equatorial latitudes was now a hindrance to us. As we headed to more northern latitudes, we were unable to synthesise enough vitamin D for our immune system. WHY DO WE NEED VITAMIN D  First of all, taking vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These are the nutrients needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. Deficiency can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults. It is one of the rare supplements that the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK suggests we all take, with Government advice being that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter. I won Alone.   I mean, it has sunk in because it was 11 months ago that it happened. But it's a great achievement. I'm really, really proud to have won. It was the icing on the cake to win, but the real joy of it was the experience out there.   It was amongst the best months of my life. I loved the simple existence of having a clear mind, thinking of little more than where is the next meal coming from? It was mentally cathartic. I think our Palaeolithic brain chemistry is wired that way. We're not meant to have quite such complicated lives, to just live this simple life, living off the land. I used to have IBS and bloating, but that hasn't come back a year later. I have less inflammation and stuff like that.   Who knew that living simplistically of nature would be so good for us?   So, If you have any other questions about the experience, please reply and let me know. The boys, stranded on the uninhabited island of ‘Ata for more than a year, survived by relying on primitive instincts, teamwork, and an innate desire to live. Who were the Six Boys Stranded for 15 Months on a remote island? The six boys were students from a Tongan boarding school whose ages ranged from 13 to 16. Their names are: Mano Totau Sione Fataua Stephen Fatai Kolo Fekitoa David Fifita Luke Veikoso Why did the Tongan Castaways Run Away? Tired of school and seeking adventure, the six kids stole a boat, only to be hit by an unsuspecting storm and shipwrecked on a remote uninhabited island. Their hopeful view of freedom soon turned into a harsh reality, facing the deserted island of ‘Ata. (Which sits only 200 miles from where we maroon our castaways on our Tongan survival expeditions). What is 'Alone UK'? “Alone” isn’t just your regular TV competition; It’s known within the bushcraft community as the ‘survival Olympics’ and considered to be a perfectly balanced test of one’s mental and physical skills. Typically, ten contestants take part, but in this case it was eleven. Leaving behind the comforts of their everyday life and immersing them in the vastness of the remote northern Canadian wilderness. And the goal? To survive the longest and claim the grand prize of £100,000. Every contestant gets their patch of territory, which is geo-fenced to keep them apart from the next adventurer. Each gets to pick out 10 survival items from a predefined list. So, armed with these and their grit and knowledge, they are dropped into the wildness completely alone, responsible for filming... --- Wow. Never have I had such thrilling fishing. First off, you can effortlessly catch little snappers and groupers straight off the beach. However, when you head out onto the outer reef you are greeted with large pelagic fish like jacks and trevally. For those who are accomplished at spearfishing, it is a great chance to target these species. I cast out over the reef from the beach with these comically large popper lures (about 12 inches long) and started to get very large fish take them. (I assume tuna or Trevally). However, even with 60lb line and 100lb leader, I was having my line snapped before I even got into the fight. I lost a couple this way before deciding it was unfair on the fish. If anyone has tips on what I could do differently, please comment below. For those who would like their own Tongan island adventure, you can check out our dates here, but hurry, we are almost sold out... For the second time in just over a year, we welcomed the lovely Kara and Nate of YouTube stardom for their second island survival adventure with us. Our body can hold out without water for only about three days. Here’s why: water plays a pivotal role in maintaining body temperature, aiding digestion, and facilitating a multitude of other internal cellular processes too. But how can you possibly find water in remote wilderness environments? Fear not, we’ve got you covered with a selection of essential techniques tailored for your survival. Knowing the Bodies Thirst The average human body needs a minimum of 350 ml of drinking water per day to survive, which can increase to 600 ml in tropical conditions. Add physical exertion to the mix, and you might need ten times the water. So, when your water supply is running thin, conservation is paramount and knowing how to find water, vital. Here’s how to conserve water: Don’t eat. Digestion, especially fats, requires water, so eat sparingly or not at all. In fact fats require 9 times the amount of water to digest than carbs and... --- Our first Philippines experience started a week before the desert island trip as we booked ourselves a few days holiday beforehand to get ourselves refreshed and on the right time zone. Some of our highlights were snorkelling with a dugong, exploring Busuanga Island, and escaping the chaos of Manila by visiting the historic Spanish part of the town, Intramuros. If you have the time available, it’s a beautiful part of the world to explore as an add-on to your trip. Once the group arrived at the hotel, it was a jolt into the faster pace of expedition life with everybody brimming with questions, excitement and apprehension of the challenge to come. We whisked them straight off for a boat trip to Coron Island and a visit to the beautiful Kayangan Lake for a swim in its crystal-clear waters. A cocktail and a safety briefing later and everyone still fighting their jet lag we all hit the hay ready for an early departure to the island where they’d undertake their training and survival challenge. The island is everything you imagine when you envisage paradise. The most vivid turquoise blue waters lapping white sand beaches. Rustling palms swaying in the breeze. Don and Eddie did an incredible job of keeping the camp running in the background and the team well-fed with daily fresh catches. Not to mention Don serenading us with his Celine Dion impressions at any given moment. The group shared countless laughs through the training phase and found plenty of... --- Creating a campfire is one of the many important skill to survive on a desert island. We ran three of them from January to March and wow did they take off with a bang. We don’t want to blow our own trumpet too much, but you know you’re doing something right when, after the very first expedition, one of the castaways is so enamoured with their experience that they decide to get their very first tattoo of the tribe emblem, which is made out of a turtle head skull (we found) and some palm fronds. The second trip was received equally well. When we got back from the island, six of the nine castaways signed up then and there for Tonga! This left us swelling with pride, knowing that we were delivering something beautiful and impactful for our customers. However, we believe we come at the subject with a little more authority than most. Our name is Desert Island Survival and we create castaway experiences for wannabe Robinson Crusoe’s as our job. Introduction: Real Life vs. Reel Life (the movies) When you imagine being marooned on a desert island, your mind probably brings forth images of Tom Hanks and his iconic side-kick Wilson in the movie Cast Away, novels like Robinson Crusoe, or survival reality shows like Bear Grylls’ “The Island” and “Survivor”. While we perhaps don’t want to end up on a desert island in a true survival situation, the more romantic notions of being marooned on a deserted island for a week are pretty appealing. In many ways, it’s the perfect opportunity for escapism. To disconnect from our busy world and live out a true adventure on a tropical island up close with untouched nature. However, unlike the choreographed drama of television, the scripted trials of film or the romantic idea of being stranded on a desert island, true... --- A LOT of you have asked the question, why not eat the crabs?? Let’s dive in… A LOT of you have asked the question, why not eat the crabs? ? The short answer they could have, despite their alarming colours, they are edible. But, there were a few reasons K&N didn’t. Let’s dive in... The effort to calorie ratio! These colourful guys might look a fair size but once you boil them and crack open up their legs and claws you are greeted with a measly amount of meat. Each crab yields about 40 calories. Plus, it’s a process to get to that meat, to optimise the calories you get from each, you need to boil them (in their calabash pot). To get to a decent meal you would be cooking a good 60 of these little fellas and cooking for HOURS. Compared to catching one medium size triggerfish! Trigger fish on the fire Haloween moon crabs Kara LOVED them (at first) “They are so cute and beautiful” Kara expressed the first night these colourful crabs stormed through camp. She (initially) loved these cute Halloween moon crabs and never got hungry enough to transform them into food. Halloween moon crabs are sometimes kept as pets due to their amazing orange and purple colours. Massacre to calorie ratio Sarah is a passionate vegan and Kara and Nate are vegetarian in their normal lives, so the idea of killing 60 of them for a meal was not appealing. Given a few more days, I think it would have become more so. Not hungry enough Thirst was the primary... --- Hi, This is Tom, I thought you might want to hear a little more about Kara and Nate’s Adventure from me! Firstly, I have to share something that is almost nauseatingly true. These guys are genuinely just as lovely as they come across in their videos. I found it incredible is their level of unwavering enthusiasm for life is just as you see! This is neither staged nor contrived. I could not quite believe it. K&N are hands down humble, kind and excellent humans. Optimism, positivity & kindness are all excellent survival traits for a tribe member, so it was no surprise to us they did well on the island. I feel like I am writing a school report now, but another important survival trait is perseverance and tenacity. Another area that impressed me was their genuine interest and desire to learn everything we could possibly teach them (particularly Nate and Dusty here). Whenever it was siesta or ‘throw a Frisbee’ time on the island, Nate would recommence braiding his fishing line. His work ethic really shone through. Few of our castaways possess the attention span to stick out learning most aspects of what we teach. A desire for instant gratification and a lack of patience is ever common these days. We had a riot hanging out with them on the island. Some of the coolest aspects of their adventure could not be captured on film. My favourite was on the very first night, I encouraged everyone at 9 pm... --- --- ## Adventures Sweden Sweden Alone bushcraft survival experience From: £2,490 Duration: 9 days Date: No Content Max People: 15 Min Age: 18+ The Highlights of our Sweden Adventure Genuine solo survival experience Learn bushcraft survival skills Fish and forage in Swedish wilderness No prior experience needed Finale celebration and feast Overview Trip Summary Do you watch the show Alone and crave to experience it for yourself?
